How to schedule a sale on Shopify (and revert the price cleanly)

Updated October 15, 2026

Yes and no. Shopify can schedule a discount — automatic discounts take a start and end date and expire on their own — and its newer Rollouts tool can schedule and A/B-test discounts and theme changes. But both work at checkout: the product page still shows the full price. A displayed sale price — the one with the original struck through on the product page — comes from the product’s compare-at price, and that is a manual edit with no native scheduler and no automatic revert. So you can schedule the cart-level discount, but the product-page sale you set by hand and reset by hand. Here’s every method, and how to close the gap.

Can you schedule a sale on Shopify?

Partly. Automatic discounts (and Rollouts) schedule and auto-expire — but only at checkout and in the cart. A product-page sale price is driven by the product’s compare-at price, and that has no native scheduler: you edit the Price and compare-at by hand at the start, and change them back by hand at the end.

Discount vs. sale price — what’s the difference?

These are two different things, and the confusion is where most “schedule a sale” searches go wrong:

  • Automatic discounts (Discounts → Create → Automatic) take a start and end date and expire on their own — but they apply at checkout and in the cart. The product page still shows the full price; the reduction appears once the item is in the cart. Good for “10% off everything this weekend,” less so for a product-page sale. (Note: a store can have at most 25 active automatic discounts, and the start/end times follow your admin’s time zone.)
  • A sale price with a strikethrough is driven by the product’s compare-at price. Set compare-at to the original price and lower the Price to the sale price, and the theme shows the sale price with the original struck through — on the product and collection pages shoppers actually browse. This has no native scheduler.

Here’s how the methods stack up:

MethodScheduled start/end?Auto-reverts?Shows on the product page?
Automatic discountYesYes (expires)No — cart & checkout only
Rollouts (2026)YesYes (revert by default)Discounts/theme only, not a price strikethrough
Edit Price + compare-at by handNoNoYes — struck-through sale price
Bulk editor / CSV importNo (runs instantly)NoYes, but no schedule and no revert

Only the last two produce the product-page sale most merchants picture — and neither one can schedule itself or put the price back.

What about the new Rollouts feature?

Rollouts (added in 2026, Basic plan and up) is genuinely native scheduling — but for the wrong layer. It schedules and A/B-tests theme changes, checkout, and the activating/deactivating of discounts, with start/end dates and an automatic revert. It does not edit a product’s base price and compare-at, so it can’t create — or cleanly undo — a product-page strikethrough sale.

How do I show a struck-through sale price?

Go to Products → the product → Price, click Compare at, put the original price in Compare-at price, and lower Price to the sale figure, then Save. When compare-at is higher than Price, your theme draws the strikethrough automatically. There is no date field — you do this at the start and undo it at the end.

What’s the risk of running a sale this way?

The revert. Starting a sale is easy to remember — it’s launch day. Ending it is where money leaks:

  • A sale left running past its end date keeps discounting and quietly erodes margin until someone notices.
  • Changing prices back by hand across dozens of SKUs is error-prone. Mistype one original and you’ve permanently mispriced that product — the compare-at you were restoring is gone, and you no longer know what it was.

For one product it’s manageable. For a 50-SKU flash sale with a deadline, doing it by hand under time pressure is exactly the task that goes wrong.

How do I automate a scheduled sale with an exact revert?

Make the sale a scheduled, reversible operation instead of a manual edit you have to undo:

  1. Before the sale, capture each variant’s exact current Price and compare-at.
  2. At the start time, apply the sale price automatically.
  3. At the end time, restore those captured values — exactly, to the cent — so every product goes back to precisely what it was.

The fix: Reprisely

Reprisely captures each variant’s exact Price and compare-at before the sale, drops the sale price at your start time, and restores those exact originals — to the cent — at the end. It stores the real captured values first, not a re-derived estimate, so there’s no calendar reminder, no mistyped revert, and no lost compare-at. The free plan covers a small number of live sales and products per sale; Pro (€12/mo) adds recurring sales, collection/tag/vendor targeting, and margin guardrails — a price floor and a max-discount cap so a scheduled sale can never dip below the number you can afford. The sale becomes something you set once, not a deadline you have to remember.

Frequently asked questions

Can you schedule a sale in Shopify?
Partly. Automatic discounts — and the newer Rollouts tool — can be scheduled with start and end dates and expire on their own, but they apply at checkout, not on the product page. A displayed sale price with the original struck through has no native scheduler.
How do I show a sale price with the original struck through?
Set the product's compare-at price to the original and lower the Price to the sale price (Products, then the product, then the Price section, then Compare at). When compare-at is higher than the price, your theme shows the sale price with the original struck through. There's no schedule — you set it at the start and reset it at the end.
Does Shopify now have a native scheduled-price feature?
Not for product prices. Rollouts (2026) can schedule and A/B-test discounts and theme changes with an automatic revert, but it doesn't change a product's base price and compare-at to create a product-page sale that restores the exact originals. The bulk editor and CSV import run the instant you click — there's no apply-on-Friday-at-midnight.
How do I automate a scheduled sale with an exact revert?
Use an app that stores each variant's exact price and compare-at before the sale, applies the sale price at the start time, and restores those exact values at the end — so the sale starts and ends on schedule and every product goes back to precisely what it was, to the cent, with no manual resetting.
